Indie indeed…

May 2nd, 2008

Sheesh, I have pretty much dissapeared from the internet this year. As you may know, I started with university, and needless to say it is very very awesome. I’ve been so busy just enjoying life, that I haven’t had time to work on any game at all. Since web coding is quicker and more rewarding on a short-term scale, I did some of that (which was very fun) for our res website. I made a neat weather app.

After the exams this month I have a huge 1.5 months holiday. In that time I will probably keep myself busy with:

1) Finishing Roach Toaster 2. This game has been coming along for way too long now. It has gone through several iterations and at this moment, I just really want to release it. It will most likely not be shareware anymore, but rather an above-par freeware game (as it already is atm).

2) Working on small games. I would like to take a cactus kinda approach to make a small 5-10minute game with oodles of style. After Rocket-Powered Frisbee Punch-Out (which I made for the TIGSource VGNG compo), I really feel like doing some like this.

3) Some random web coding for fun (ie trying to take over world)!

So yeah… Like I always say… Keep Toasting!

Dev.Mag issue 21!

March 31st, 2008

So after quite a delay, Dev.Mag 21 is finally released.

In this issue we look at AGS (Adventure Game Studio), review loads of indie games, coverage GDC and continue the Irrlicht and Blender series!

Get it here as usual!

Enjoy. :)

Yeah, university is taking up a lot of my time. I am really really enjoying it at the moment! Whooop. So, yeah my game dev has hit a humongous patch of molasses. Nothing much has happened.

On the other hand, I am doing web coding for our hostel’s website. I love web coding and am really enjoying it.

I am still throwing countless ideas for games in my head though.

So yeah. Measly update: over.

What? I missed IGF?

February 26th, 2008

Geez, I’ve been so awesomely busy with uni this year that I have kinda slacked down on devving (note: none at all). So yeah, I am still busy with uni and I don’t think I’ll continue devving soon. I am itching to dev something, but I can’t because, I am don’t have my PC in my dorm room and studies/uni life kinda takes a higher priority.

So, I managed to miss IGF (wtf?). I only saw the results recently, and I am loving it. Indies representing all over (even in main awards). I like it. :). I also saw the gathering of TIGS developers (with their monocles of awesome) at GDC. I so wish that I was there. The way I see it, I’ll probably get my dev on in the holidays, but then I won’t be working on RT2. I’ll probably work on small vacation games (just for fun). For me to now finish up RT2, I would have to get into another routine/lifestyle. Don’t worry (for those that worry about it), it will be finished eventually. I promise!

Me and my bro have also started working on a gameboy/guitar band. I will post a link when we have proper recordings.

Cheers until whenever!

Dev.Mag Issue 20 tops 50 pages!

February 8th, 2008

Yes, issue 20 of the awesome Dev.Mag has arrived and its our biggest issue yet! We keep going from strength to strength.

It has tons of reviews, and other game dev related paraphernalia! Get it while its hot!

On another note, you’ve probably wondered where I’ve been (or not…). Well, university started and the first week was uber hectic (note: 6am-11pm each day). My classes started this week and I’m super busy. Because of this new environment, I am obviously still trying to adapt to it. So until I can get into a nice routine, game dev is unfortunately going to have to take a backseat.

I’ll still try to pop in here every now and then (and announce Dev.Mags). :P

I was supposed to write a RT2 devblog today, but I can’t really remember what I did this week. I think I made 1 or 2 levels. The rest of the time was spent on FF12. :P

Anyway, on to topic. I have been thinking about the internet lately.

With Web 2.0 we are leaving pieces of ourselves all over the internet. We are posting on forums, and if you are like me, on several of them. We are apart of at least 1 social network and we litter the net with who we are. We write blogs, we upload videos to YouTube. We do countless things. Some lesser known forums and websites might fade with time, never to be seen, except in the Internet Wayback Machine.

But… Most prominent websites like YouTube, and several other social networks will most likely still be around when our children pave their way onto the internet.

With our generation, the only info we really have about our parents are stories, photos, letters and that kind of stuff. We don’t “really” know what they were like a few decades back.

Our children, who will grow up with the internet will easily be able to google us and see what kind of things we said when we were in our teens and mid-twenties for example. We are the first generation that will leave behind a considerable footprint on the internet.

I can only imagine how cool it would be to google my parents and see their MySpace profiles and seeing them act like they were so “cool”. Imagine the videos?

P.S. Hi future kids! Got some dirt on me now?

Since RT2 has taken up such a substantial part of my life, I have decided to refrain from “feature creeping” and trying to make it perfect and get the game done and out by 30 April 2007.

So, I drew up a relatively “easy” plan to finish Roach Toaster 2.

Milestone 1 is the completion of the campaign scheduled to be finished on Feb 29.

Milestone 2 is the completion of the bonus levels on 31 March.

Milestone 3 is all the bonus content like unlockable content and stuff. This has no date. If I finish with the above beforehand, I’ll delve into this.

Release Date: 30 April.

During the last month, its polish, get the art and setup the website.

This last week or 2, I managed to get work done on the story and the campaign. Its now on lvl 13/23 levels. :)
